Our homes are not what they used to be
Between advances in technology and changes in culture, our homes have transformed into the nerve centres of our lives. Every aspect of life can now take place within our own four walls.
Covid forced all of us to reassess our priorities and opened our eyes to the benefits of a more balanced life. The result is more professionals working from home at least some of the time. Video conferencing tools like Zoom and Teams, and benefits like flexible working have turned our homes into offices.
At the same time, an explosion of internet services cater to our leisure interests.
Streaming services like Netflix, Spotify, and Peloton have turned our homes into movie theatres, concert halls, and fitness studios.
Online games like Fortnite and COD and platforms like Twitch have turned our homes into digital battlegrounds.
Personal assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant and connected speakers, alarms, doorbells, cameras, and thermostats have turned our homes into interconnected smart homes.
These innovations are permanent, and they represent progress. They make our lives easier to manage, more fulfilling, and more balanced than we had previously thought possible.
Here’s the thing, though: all these tools and ways of working, while fantastic, are all dependent on the quality of our home’s connection to the internet. And most of the time, it’s not good enough.
